Students admitted to the O’Neill School Environmental Science Ph.D. program usually receive a 100% tuition and fee waiver, university-paid health insurance, and a stipend as part of a student academic appointment. The stipend is updated annually according to a university established cost of living adjustment schedule ($28,800 for AY2025-2026, including summer months).
A student academic appointment (SAA) consists of a 20-hour per week work assignment as a Research Assistant (RA) in your major advisor’s laboratory, for all 12 months of the year. Being assigned as an Associate Instructor (AI), the instructor of record, for an undergraduate course is possible, but less common.
The academic appointment is typically awarded for the duration of the program provided the assigned appointee duties are being fulfilled, a GPA of 3.0 is maintained, and satisfactory progress is made toward the degree.
The O’Neill School Environmental Science Ph.D. degree is awarded by the Indiana University Graduate School Bloomington. For additional information, see University Graduate School Bloomington.
