Dean's Welcome

We are committed to developing leaders and advancing knowledge for the greater good.

We’re taking on the most difficult challenges facing our world, from poverty to pollution. Together, our students and faculty are united in seeking understanding that leads to solutions.

Established in 1972, SPEA was the first school of its type in the world, bringing together the study of public affairs, environmental science, and policy. Here you can study any one of those disciplines or all three, as our academic programs prepare you to join our more than 34,000 alumni in careers that allow you to move seamlessly between the private, public, and nonprofit sectors.

As we enter our fifth decade, our international reputation continues to grow. Our graduate program in public affairs is the highest ranked  of any university—public or private—and several of our specialty programs are also top ranked. We are growing as an institution with expanding enrollments, new faculty, and new academic programs. We’re especially proud of the new opportunities we’re forging in countries around the world through SPEA Overseas Education and our partnerships with international academic institutions.

We’d enjoy the chance to meet you and work with you. And please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions as you explore your fit in the SPEA community. I look forward to seeing you on campus.

Best regards,
John D. Graham, Ph.D.

We’re proud of our ranking as the number one public university in our field in the nation. That’s due to our prominent faculty who are engaged in innovative research. It’s also due to the opportunities offered our students through our rigorous core curriculum, an array of 12 concentrations—some considered to be the best in the country.
